The Main CharactersI found Kings of Overgrove through twitter (@KingsOvergrove) while looking for other independent comic book creators.  Kings of Overgrove caught my attention because the creator is giving away half his graphic novel for free.  He also created a motion comic he published on YouTube.

What I love

From the first look at the website, we can tell that Kings of Overgrove is special.  The site has a great design that reflects the story, is easy to navigate, promotes the viewer to share the site, and allows for comments.  You can’t ask for anything more from a website.  It looks great and it does its job!

For those of you who read this blog for my articles on Internet Marketing for Artists or are starting your own online comic book, you can probably learn a lot from this site.  If you’re putting together your online portfolio, promoting your project, or publishing an online series this is a great website to explore before creating your own.

Reading the Comic

An animator at the Milwaukee Animation Group meeting suggested this video for the Video of the Week.  It is a student film by Kyu-bum Lee.  It is created with traditional animation techniques which always blows me away as I stick primarily with digital tools.  Without going on too long, let me introduce to you “Death Buy Lemonade”:

The plan is in two days on March 6, 2012 I will be attempting to create a motion comic in under 48 hours. The first question you might ask is why I would do this? The answer is… I am attempting to raise money via kickstarter.com for an online graphic novel. According to my friends Melissa and Loyal, it is important to have a video with any fundraising attempts through Kickstarter because it helps to add visual appeal and shows commitment to potential funders.

During the 48 hour time span I will also be posting YouTube videos of my progress. The plan is to shoot a video and post it every 12 hours. Feel free to follow along with me in real time or if you’re reading this in the future you can watch these videos as I will post them on this blog.

My computer battery no longer works for my laptop.  This means if the plug comes loose, I lose everything I didn’t save.

I just put in an hour of working on my animation and the computer lost power due to me doing something unimportant… So unimportant I can’t remember what it was.

Maybe I was reaching for my calendar to see what I had to do today! I feel complete rage.  Thinking of the things I have to redo from that hour of work.

What I lose wasn’t animation, it was breaking down assets in flash to be smaller and to reuse items, which is really boring.  Man I don’t know if I should jump back into working on what I was doing or just do it later….. I think I better just get back to what I was doing that way later I won’t be confused when I think I already did it and forgot I lost it due to my own incompetence.

I wrote this while creating Hillary Adventures. I did not have my blog up at the time, so I planned on adding it later

It was originally written August 10, 2009.

This morning, I attempted to teach Leah flash. It didn’t go over so well. It is a very confusing program with a lot going on. I think the problem was that I started teaching her the tools that she already knows in illustrator, but they do some things differently in flash. Also, working with symbols is a confusing concept and I have yet to master it myself. This made teaching it even more difficult.

I am hoping to find a few tutorial videos at youtube.com. If I find any, I will let you know. It is already 10:15 AM and I have not finished very much of anything. The current plan for the morning is to re-plan the schedule for this project, organize my office (it is currently cluttered and unorganized), and pick up my cat from my brothers.

For those of you that are wondering, I do not just leave my cat at my brothers randomly. Leah and I just returned from a vacation on Madeline Island. It was our one year anniversary. It was a happy celebration, with us visiting my father-in-law and that side of the family. It is sad to think I started working on this project over a year ago and have not even finished animating the first chapter yet…. At least something is getting done now.

It is 2:00 am on a Tuesday Morning. Working on finishing the Hillary animation I started over a year ago. It was a bizarre project to begin with due to the fact that I had no idea how to use flash. Now I do, but it is still a long and slow process. With school and work at the Rehab center it is hard to stay focus on getting anything done.

My goal is to finish it and have it published on 03.10.10. Being that today is 03.09.10; I do not have much time. On the 10th I have to give a presentation and on the 11th I have to take a final exam. If I really push it, I can get something out by then.
