I’m at a point with this blog where I have reached a cross roads.
As I see it, I have only 3 options for the future of the jasonloveslife.com website.
Option 1: I can quit posting regularly and specifically make this into a behind the scenes blog about my webcomic with the possibilities of losing you and the hundreds of other regular readers I have. This would allow me to pick up more freelance jobs.
Option 2: I can continue on with my current posting schedule and see what happens while keeping the same number of freelance clients.
Option 3: I can give up some of my freelance work and put more energy into posting more often, create some amazing resources, and provide some in-depth how-to articles (eventually adding audio and video).
It also needs to be said that I have a wife and a 3 month old son to provide for.
Goals
To find the best answer I need to really focus on my personal goals and the goals of this website.
Personal Goals (in order of importance)
- Keep my family safe and cared for.
- To live a life of freedom without having to get a “real” job.
- To share my art with the world.
- To be known for my art.
- To help others reach their artistic goals.
Goals of this Website (in order of importance)
- Provide helpful information, resources, and motivation to comic creators.
- An outlet for me to share what I have learned and what I’m currently learning.
- A way to promote my artwork to the world.
- Make money by monetizing this site (to feed my family).
Changes Ahead
I have decided to take a chance and go with option 3.
It wasn’t an easy decision but it feels like the right one. To work on this website, I will be limiting my freelance jobs. To pay the bills I’ll be taking on more credit card debt and selling off some of our belongings to help us get through.
If my calculations are correct, we should be able to put all are time into this site and the comic book for 2 months before going broke. At the end of that time I will have to re-evaluate my situation and see if our needed financial goals from this site have been met.
I’ve went ahead and purchased a course on blogging that should help me with the best way to monetize this site. This way you still get great articles, more updates, resources, and I can hopefully make a little money for all my work.
I want to make it clear that my focus of this blog will never be to make money, it is to share my art and help others do the same. If I wanted to sell my soul for dollars I would join the corporate world where my soul’s value is higher.
How you can help
With the extra time for posting new articles it would help to get a better idea of what you want to know about, what questions you have, what interests you, etc, etc.
Some examples of what I want to cover are:
- How to get 2,000 views on your WebComic’s YouTube channel.
- Setting-up a wordpress site for a webcomic.
- Tips for Writing better comics.
We are also thinking about expanding into videos and podcasts, so please include in your comments subjects you would like us to cover, questions you have about webcomics, and/or would you like us to start a podcast/web series?
