As a kid and even today, I don’t consider myself a comic book guy.

I enjoy the stories and love reading them, but I am not very knowledgeable about the history of the characters, the name of writers, or a lot of the back stories about my favorite characters.

I partially blame this on the fact that as a kid my parents did let me buy comics because we didn’t have the money. I had the choice of buying a comic book or renting a video game over the weekend and video games won every time.

This is one of the reasons I found this video so fascinating.

A few things I took from this video:

  • Some people see Superman as the greatest superhero of them all. They say that at the begging of the video and I have to disagree!
  • Comic books were more politics than I realized.
  • Wonder Woman’s creator is amazingly interesting.
  • Marvel filled for Bankruptcy in the ’90’s

Looking for a quick way to promote your comic, blog, or other project?

An easy way to create a little buzz is to steal I mean borrow someone else’s brand.

If you look at huge franchises such as Star Wars, Disney, Marvel, DC, etc, etc you have people who are just crazy for these characters.  You have people that want to see everything and anything related to them even if it isn’t from the companies that own those properties.

If you create works of art that feature these characters, you have an opportunity to build up viewers and possibly convert some of them into fans.  Just creating copies of your favorite characters isn’t going to bring in a flood gate of people; your art has to have some distinct qualities.

Found this while doing research on Alan Moore. Even though I have only read “Watchman”, I am already putting him up on a pedestal.

It has to do with the way he views the comics, society, the role of the storyteller, and the world.

His jewelry choices, however, does leave his fashion sense in question; but who am I to judge I’m still in my pajamas at 9:30 at night.

A couple heads up:

  • This is a full length documentary so it is long.
  • He talks about a lot of things and not just writing or comics.
  • He talks about adult things so don’t watch in front of kids or at work.
  • There are a few images of a sexual nature (again, no kids or work).

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Lego Star Wars?  Yeah!
We are starting a new segment here at Jason Loves Life called “Video of the Week”.  The focus is on finding cool videos online and then talk about them.

This video is pure genius for a number of reasons.  It contains great animation effects, it covers the story in a funny way, and yet doesn’t try to force humor.  The fact that it lampoons a beloved American movie series has allowed it to receive over 8 million views and counting.
